Narînk is the form of ceremonial song sung in Kurdish weddings when the bride is taken from her father’s house. These works performed during the bride-taking ceremony are sometimes also referred to as Narîn.

Narînk songs have a rhythmic structure; however, like lorîs, they are sung in a sad and emotional tone. Their contents mostly deal with the themes of ayrılık and veda. The bride’s separation from her family, emotional rupture, and social transition form the basic narrative framework of this form.

Formal characteristics

  • Their rhythms are simple and generally stable.
  • The melodies are lyrical and soft.
  • The complex rhythmic variety seen in the Serşo form is not found here.
  • There are examples performed in different makams, but the lyrical structure is often similar.
  • It may contain many çarîne (couplets).
  • Melody and rhythm generally do not change; the lyrics vary.

The Narînk form is an important musical expression representing emotional intensity in the Kurdish wedding tradition. In this respect, it carries both a ceremonial and lyrical character within Mûzîka Kurdî.
